Writer: Uzma AzharUzma Azhar

Ingredients for kofta balls:

  • 1/2 kg beef keema

  • 1 tsp poppy seeds

  • 2 medium onions (one browned and one raw)

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

  • 1 tsp white cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste

  • Pinch of gram flour

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 bunch of fresh coriander leaves

  • 6 green chillies

Ingredients for the gravy:

  • 2 onions (cut and boiled until soft)

  • 4 tomatoes

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • 1 tsp chilli powder

  • Salt to taste

  • Pinch of turmeric

  • 1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste

  • Coriander, garam masala and green chillies to garnish

Directions to make kofta balls:

  1. To make the koftas: take the keema and mix all the rest of the ingredients with it and put it in a chopper until well minced.

Directions to make the gravy:

  1. Grind the onions until it forms a paste.

  2. Take your tomatoes and make them into tomato puree (method for this is also on the blog) and put it aside.

  3. Add the grinded onions to a pot with oil in it until they start to turn brown and add the coriander powder, chilli powder, salt, turmeric, ginger garlic pasted mix well until all the masala is completely cooked and the oil comes to the surface.

  4. Then add 1 cup of water.

  5. Form the meat into balls (make sure they are not too big) and add it to the gravy and leave it for 10 minutes without stirring.

  6. After 10 minutes gently shake the pan. Do not use a spoon to stir otherwise the balls will break.

  7. Boil 5-6 glasses of water and remove the lid of the pot very slightly and add the water to the pot and put the lid back on.

  8. Leave on a low flame to cook for about an hour. (Do not keep opening the lid to check)

  9. Once cooked, garnish with coriander, garam masala and green chillies and leave to cook on a very slow flame for 15 minutes.

  10. Serve hot!
